SEBASTIAN

Nine-to-five doesn’t apply when you’re running a billion-dollar empire. I do what needs to be done, regardless of the time of day or day of the week—and I expect my team to do the same. I’ve burned through three assistants in the last year because of it, but I have no plans to change my ways.

That’s why I’m at the office late into the evening. I’m in the conference room with a select team whose main goal is to obtain Alistair Dunleavey’s shipping company. Whatever it takes.

“Dunleavey is still on the fence,” I inform them, annoyed. “Which means we need to prep for two scenarios: a willing partnership, and a hostile takeover.”

Of course, even the partnership option wouldn’t let Alistair keep control for long. I’d have him out the door in a week, thanks to my cutthroat legal team. But he doesn’t know that.

One of my new researchers looks uneasy. “I’m not sure… If you want to proceed in a more aggressive manner, we need to talk to legal about our options.”

“Legal will just have to find a way,” I snap, irritated. “I don’t want to hear reasons why I can’t do something. I want solutions. Fast. And if you want a future at Wolfe Capital, you’ll learn to never tell me ‘No’ again,” I add.

The guy quakes.

“Anything else?” I look around, impatient. There’s no reply. “Good, that means you’ll have a plan for me by the end of the week.”

I walk out, back to my office. Becca joins me there, a moment later. “Nice inspirational speech there, coach,” she quips. “Clear eyes, full hearts.”

“Is that some TV reference?”

“Forget it,” she says, clearly sensing I’m not in the mood for chitchat. That’s one of the things I can depend on with Becca: She doesn’t waste time on petty bullshit. Not when there’s money to be made. “I’ll convene with legal tonight, start drawing up plans.”

I nod, pleased. It’s already past nine p.m., but don’t tell her it can wait until morning, or for her not to interrupt her plans. I pay people for their time, and absolute dedication. “And fire the new kid, whatshisname.”

“Kenny,” Becca sighs. “I could use him on this, his research has been excellent.”

“Fine. Have him complete the project, then fire him,” I agree. “He’s clearly not cut out for the place.”

She nods in agreement. I head for the door, but Becca lingers, and I can see there’s something she wants to say. “More thoughts on the takeover?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “Avery seems sweet,” she says instead.

I stop. “You’ve never been one not to speak your mind,” I point out dryly. “Why start now?”

Becca looks amused. “Fair enough. I don’t trust her.”

I wait, surprised.

“I don’t know how you met, or what you think her deal is, but the girl has an agenda,” Becca continues.

“What makes you say that?” I ask, curious. Becca has great instincts—usually.

“No reason I can put my finger on,” Becca shrugs. “Just a gut reaction.”

“Well, this time your gut might be mistaken,” I reply.
